The Most Common Mistakes When Laying Laminate Flooring and How to Avoid Them

Laminate flooring is a popular choice among homeowners due to its affordability, durability, and aesthetic appeal. However, improper installation can lead to a range of issues that reduce its longevity and appearance. To ensure a seamless installation, be aware of the most common mistakes and learn how to avoid them.

1. Not Allowing the Flooring to Acclimate

Laminate flooring needs time to adjust to the temperature and humidity of the room before installation. Failing to do so can lead to expansion or contraction after the planks are installed, causing gaps or buckling.

Solution: Allow the laminate flooring to sit in the room where it will be installed for at least 48 hours before starting the project.

2. Installing Over an Uneven Subfloor

An uneven subfloor can cause laminate planks to sit improperly, leading to creaks, gaps, and an unstable floor surface.

Solution: Before installation, check for high or low spots on the subfloor. Use a leveling compound for concrete subfloors or sand down wooden ones to create a smooth and even surface.

3. Skipping the Underlayment

Underlayment serves as a protective layer that helps with noise reduction, moisture resistance, and comfort underfoot. Neglecting this step can result in a less durable and noisier floor.

Solution: Always use the appropriate underlayment recommended by the flooring manufacturer. It will help provide a solid base for the laminate planks.

4. Failing to Leave Expansion Gaps

Laminate flooring expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes. Without proper expansion gaps, the flooring may warp or buckle.

Solution: Leave at least a 1/4-inch gap around the perimeter of the room, including doorways and against fixed structures like cabinets.

5. Not Staggering the Planks Correctly

Planks laid without proper staggering can create a pattern that looks unnatural and reduces structural stability.

Solution:Follow a stagger pattern by ensuring that plank ends are offset by at least 6 inches to create a more visually appealing and structurally sound layout.

Avoiding these common mistakes can ensure that your laminate flooring installation is successful, leading to a long-lasting and visually appealing floor. Proper preparation, attention to detail, and following manufacturer guidelines will help you achieve a professional-looking finish and enhance the lifespan of your laminate flooring.
