What is luxury vinyl plank/luxury vinyl tile ( LVP / LVT )?

A lot of our customers who walk through our door know they want something waterproof, but typically gravitate to 'waterproof' laminate or good old fashioned tile. Not that there's anything wrong with either choice, but there's also a 3rd choice to consider. Luxury vinyl flooring, otherwise known as LVT or LVP (luxury vinyl tile/luxury vinyl plank).

So what is LVT? If you'd have asked that question a few years ago, the correct response would have been a incredibly plastic looking, waterproof floor. However, LVT has come on leaps and bounds since it's release. If you're willing to pay a little more, your LVT can have all the style benefits of real wood flooring, with the practicality of a completely waterproof floor. Just make sure you pick the right quality flooring, not all LVT is made the same.

I'll go more in to what to look out for when choosing the right LVT in another post, for now let's just take a look at the structure of a board. There are typically 5 layers to a quality LVT floor. UV coating, Wear layer, Decor film, WPC/SPC core and IXPE pad (or similar), as shown below.

All 5 layers play a key role in making LVT not only a stylish looking floor, but also something resilient, hardy and able to withstand high traffic. Perfect for busy homes with pets & children, this flooring can be installed in any room, from lounge to kitchen to bathroom.
